A strange start to the day, the Sat Nav decided that The Golden Spike Tower was on the north side of the tracks, wrong! So it was back to manual navigation after a free breakfast at Taco John’s, why free you may ask – simple they forgot my order and get me my money back and gave me the breakfast as well. I spent the day at The Golden Spike Tower photo and video the activities,

A few statistics about Bailey Yard

  • 8 miles long
  • 351 miles of track
  • 65 tracks
  • 2850 acres
  • 35 coal trains per 24 hours, each 135 cars containing a total of 14,000 tons and loaded while moving at Powder Basin in 45 minutes, trains over 1.5 miles long
  • 150 through trains per 24 hours
  • 3000 hump sorts per 24 hours/7/365 with 97% accuracy using gravity and barcodes
  • 16 million US gallons diesel used at Bailey Yard, North Platte per month

    Two years ago while Marlene and I were on one of our cross country trips we saw this in the offical Nebraska brochure and stopped in North Platte to see it.  After looking for over an hour we finally asked one of the yard workers who informed us it was still being built.  It looks good.  We might have to go back.
